Law of Attraction Insights - Part #1: Introduction

law of attraction

This post is part of a series of insights about the Law of Attraction.

I’ve mentioned the Law of Attraction quite a lot over the last few months but I’ve not really covered it in any great detail. I’ve found that the more I learn about it the more little insights I get about what it is, and more often, what it isn’t.

In this post I’ll give my own thoughts about what my understanding of the Law of Attraction is and in further posts I’ll add some insights that will hopefully clarify some points, and perhaps myths, a little more.

What is the Law of Attraction?

In a nutshell it is a universal law which states that “that which is like, shall be drawn unto itself”. That quote by itself doesn’t mean very much but the essence of it in our everyday world is that we tend to attract what we focus on, whether we believe in the Law of Attraction or not. It often works rather like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Have you ever noticed how some people manage to attract the same circumstances over and over - one abusive husband after another, one patronising boss after another, one illness after another and so on. On the more positive side, there are some people that just appear ‘lucky’ - they attract all the good stuff into their lives and everything just seems to work out well for them.

Teachers of the Law of Attraction tell us that it is a universal law, which means that it operates without our having to believe in it - rather like gravity. They say that it is based upon a power that is beyond each of us individually but that we each have the power to create our own reality of life by the choice of the thoughts that we focus upon.

How Does the Law of Attraction Work?

That’s the tricky bit! If you read some of the more technical texts you will hear theories about how it is rooted in metaphysics. Personally, I find that this stuff goes way beyond my understanding but the basis of it seems to be rooted in energy. Everything in the universe is energy in some form or another. Even a basic study of the sciences teaches us that energy can never be created or destroyed and that it merely changes form. We are humans and yet we are also forms of energy, and so is the computer you are using right now, and the clothes you are wearing, and the buildings you occupy, and the food you eat and so on.

The theory is that energy vibrates and that the thoughts we think vibrate on different frequencies and so thoughts of anger are vibrationally different to thoughts of compassion. I’m sure you’ve all had the feeling of meeting somebody new and taking an instant shine to them, or perhaps the opposite where you dislike somebody but you don’t know why - they just give you ‘bad vibes’.

And of course, I’m sure we’ve all had experiences where we can pick up on the mood of another person without them having to say or do anything. We can just sense if somebody we know is in a particularly bad mood for instance. How do we do this? Some kind of intuition probably. But the theory is that we pick up on these vibrations that other people emmanate.

Like Attracts Like

The theory of the Law of Attraction is that whatever we are predominantly vibrating tends to attract other similar vibrations which means that we attract people who have similar thoughts as us, we attract circumstances and events that match what we are thinking etc.

Of course, much of this can occur naturally. For example, somebody might be looking for a job and see one he wants to go for but he holds the belief, “I’m not good enough for that job” and so he goes to the interview with a sense of unworthyness and he does not exude confidence. The interviewers can probably detect the attitude of this candidate and they want somebody who is confident and so they don’t offer him the job which enforces his belief even more.

Is this Law of Attraction or just a self-fulfilling prophecy? Perhaps a little bit of both. But where the Law of Attraction is more appealing is when we are taught that we can use it to attract specific things to us - such as the perfect soulmate. The idea is that if we focus on what we want and get specific in our thinking, that eventually it must be attracted to us - it is law.

Why Then, Are We Not All Happy?

Surely if all we need to do is just focus on what we want and we get it then why are we not all living every day of our lives in pure bliss and abunance? With every desire, there is also its opposite - the lack of it. If you want money, the opposite is the lack of money. If you want health the opposite is sickness, disease and injury. If you want love the opposite is lonliness and so it is with everything.

The problem is that humans have a tendency to think about what they don’t want, they think about all the things that are going wrong in their lives, and what might go wrong in the future. They tell their friends all their woes and thus keep their attention firmly on the things that they don’t want. Globally, this is perpetuated even further with the doom & gloom media. The average newscast on TV tends to spout primarily a message of disaster, despair, crises, crime, terrorism, injustice, the list goes on and on but it is rarely good news.

Of course, it’s just plain hard to focus on the good things sometimes. If you’re in debt, it’s difficult to feel and think abundantly. If you’re sick or injured it doesn’t feel natural to think healthy thoughts. When everything around you is negative it takes tremendous willpower to keep your thoughts positive and just on the good stuff - the stuff that you want.

This is the reason that most of us just keep on attracting the same old things - we see what is happening all around us right now and so that is where our attention is, and that is what we vibrate so we just attract more of the same. When things go wrong, everything seems to go wrong at once. The worse it gets, the worse it gets. On the other hand, when we’re on an upward spiral it feels as though we’re being given a helping hand as the better it gets, the better it gets.

The trick, is to focus on only what we want, even when surrounded by the opposite.

Thoughts v Feelings

Most of the teachings that I have studied say that it is not really the thoughts that we think, or the words that we use, but in fact the emotions that we are feeling that really matter. This leads to another problem because often we can say words that are positive but still feel wretched inside and often we find it difficult to shake off those feelings of despair, guilt, loneliness, sadness or whatever it may be, no matter what we say to ourselves.

We know how our emotions feel. We have a ton of different emotions that we feel but we can generally classify them into two broad groups - those that feel good and those that do not. Where do these emotions come from? LoA teachers tell us that these emotions are our internal guidance system and that when we feel good, it is telling us that whatever we are focused on right now is in harmony with our desires - in other words, we’re on the right track so we should continue doing that.

On the other hand, if we are feeling bad, that is an indication that what we are focused upon is not in harmony with our desires so we should stop doing that. Take a simple example - imagine your home going up in flames and losing everybody and everything in it. How does that feel? I’ll assume that all of you would agree that it feels bad. Nobody wants that so our guidance system says “hey, that’s not what you want, why would you think such a thing?”.

I wont try to use a positive example because we all want different things so what feels good to me might not feel good to you but I’m sure you can come up with something that feels good to you.

Law of Attraction Resources

There are now many people who are teaching Law of Attraction techniques but here are a few of the more prominent ones, and those that have been most influential to me.

Esther & Jerry Hicks (Abraham)

Esther Hicks is what is known as a channeller. She talks about the Law of Attraction but her teachings do not come from herself, but from a non-physical entity known only as Abraham. I personally find it difficult to comprehend the whole idea of non-physical spiritual beings but I tend to ignore that and just listen to the message. Jerry Hicks is Esther’s husband and for many years he asked questions of Abraham through his wife, Esther and together they conduct many workshops and have written several books.

I have read all of their Law of Attraction books and I find them extremely practical because they have a great many examples of common situations that we find ourselves in, and how to turn around our thinking to be in better alignment to what we want. They also teach many specific processes such as the daily workshop which is rather like a meditation where for around 15-20 minutes a day you get comfortable, shut your eyes and simply visualise and think about everything that you want for yourself.

Wayne Dyer

Wayne Dyer is a motivational speaker who has been writing books and speaking for over 30 years. Not all of his books are about Law of Attraction, I have started reading some of his very early books and there is no mention of it there but perhaps his most prominent Law of Attraction work is his book, The Power of Intention.

http://www.drwaynedyer.com/

However, Wayne also does a weekly radio show with the online radio station Hay House Radio. This is a wonderful resource - 24 hour free online radio show with all sorts of great guest speakers, one of them being Wayne Dyer. What is especially cool is that if you become a member (costs $48 a year) you have access to all of the archives. There are currently 3 years worth of archives so its great value. There are also several other shows based around the Law of Attraction here.

The Secret Movie

The Law of Attraction has been around for many years though I’m not entirely sure when it was given that name. However in 2006, the movie The Secret by Rhonda Byrne really catapaulted the idea into the mainstream. Personally I love the movie and I have watched it many times as it always makes me feel good but it has a downside too - it has launched the career of many a LoA ‘guru’ and spawned an entire industry around LoA. Just about everybody is teaching it now and of course, like with everything, there is a lot of hype and empty promises out there.

Watching the movie you’ll also find many other motivational speakers featured including Bob Proctor, Jack Canfield, Joe Vitalie, Bob Doyle, John Demartini so from there you can find lots more avenues to explore.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post, I have a lot more to say on the subject to stay tuned for the rest of this series. Also, if you have any questions about Law of Attraction then please feel free to ask in the comments and if its something I’ve got an opinion on, I’ll try and include it in the series.

Stumble it!

@Paddy, I think most people go through times like that. And of course when it feels like everything is going wrong, it’s hard not to just think about the bad stuff all the time.

Hi Caroline,

You are the epitome of Law of Attraction. You have already demonstrated that in your down to earth genuineness. And what is really interesting is that you have chosen a perfect topic that fits your persona because I feel that you already have mastered it. And also the Law of Attraction also pertains to internet marketing. You cannot attract quality people if you are not sincere and passionate about the things you care about. And you certainly did a good job transferring your talents from one successful blog into a new blog of another niche topic.

The whole topic on the Law of Attraction is so abused. Law of Attraction is based on the eye of the beholder. We all have different personalities and personality clashes always occur.
Like for example, arrogant people really turn me off. Even though they may be attract people to them, I would say most of the people are probably arrogant. Like for example, my brother in law is incredibly arrogant. I can’t stand him at all.

The point I am trying to make is I would not buy a Law of Attraction book from someone I don’t like because of the feelings I have about that person. I am good at reading people. Just by the way they word something in their blog content or articles, I can usually tell if the person is genuine or not.

And with regard to think positively, the best advice I can give is to think of your most proudest moment in your life and just playing that image over and over again in my head. That is how I stay positive. Like for example, my most proudest moment in my life is when people at my job said that I am in the wrong field and I should be writing for a living. Wow. Just think what that does for my self esteem and confidence.

And channeling that positive energy from something you are proud of does a lot of wonders. I learn this from my dad who is an herbalist and Buddhist. We all have adopted the Buddhist perspective on life.

You did a really good job touching a hot button topic, Caroline. Keep up the good work.

@Billy, with regards to personality traits such as arrogance etc, every person in the world is unique with their own mixes of traits. What is attractive to one person is unnatractive to others. What you consider to be arrogance, and a turn off to you, may be perceived as perhaps confidence in others and be a turn on. I believe that the way LoA works in terms of people is that it helps people gravitate towards others that will appreciate them, which is probably how you found my blogs :-)

I have found people through Internet marketing that completely turn me off, they don’t resonate with me at all and yet they have thousands of blog subscribers so obviously they do resonate with many others.

Yes, Caroline. Thank you so much for better articulating what I have been trying to say all this time. Like you said that there are people who have turned you off who in turn have thousands of blog subscribers. I would assume that those subscribers are attracted to the personality trait of that blogger.

Like for example, if the blogger happens to be arrogant, I would assume those subscribers are arrogant too. Let me give you an example. John Chow for example is incredibly arrogant. Although I do have a lot of respect for him as a highly successful Wordpress blogger who have carved out a niche for himself, he just turns me off by his arrogance. I don’t mind people being arrogant if they show some respect for the little guy like me who is started out as a blogger.
His blogs are so negative about the little guy starting out as a blogger. I get incredibly depressed when I read his blogs.

What makes people attracted to you is your incredible genuineness. You don’t brag about your money making success like he does where he looks down on the little guy who is started out. Like for example, do not contact me until you have 100 thousand visitors a day on your blog!!
So even though John Chow has a lot of subscribers, they are all in the same league as him. Just imagine, if John were to invite people to a blogging convention, I would feel uncomfortable going there because I would feel like I don’t fit in. Do you see where I am coming from when it comes the Law of Attraction.
Law of Attraction is in the eye of the beholder. Just like the political blogs that always have me in constant outrage all the time. LOL!!! That is why I stop reading them. :)
Take care Caroline. You really sparked an emotional hot button of mines.

@Billy, that’s extremely interesting because I don’t feel that way about John Chow AT ALL. I think he is an extremely down to earth guy, who is incredibly genuine and honest about what he does, I don’t think he brags at all (he just announced income, just like I do) and he never lets the pursuit of money get in the way of what matters in his life - family and food :D

His blog one one of my regular readings and although I skip over most of the guests posts, I always like his food posts and the ones where he talks about his lifestyle. I’d like to meet him one day and I’m sure he wouldn’t care one bit how many blog readers I had.

It’s all a matter of perspective. Actually your comment has just given me a great idea for a blog post :-)

Hi Caroline,

I will tell you why I don’t like reading his posts because the people who make comments are so negative. I was on his site the other day, and I was reading the comments of his readers. These are their comments:
“It is so hard to make a living as a writer because everybody is talking about the same thing.”

I see those same comments over and over again. Now how can you be inspired by those negative comments. It just sickens me and I am the kind of person who stay away from negative people.

It is not that I dislike John Chow. I said I do admire his success, but to me, he just doesn’t resonate with me as someone who respects a blogger like myself who is starting out.

It seems like everyone on his site is in the same league as him.
I feel like I don’t belong. It is like me getting invited to a party I didn’t belong to.

Thanks to you, I have been spending a lot of time writing about the law of attraction pertaining to the concept of attraction marketing. You had pushed a hot button of mine and got me in the direction of the law of attraction.

I went to a Health seminar and, for some strange reason, I was impressed by the speaker to the point that I stayed afterwords to talk to her. When I usually go to a seminar, I always leave after when it is done. But for some strange reason, I had an itch to get to know her because the way she expressed herself so well on the topics of health and fitness, a topic that I am so passionate about.

And I don’t even know her. Have you had an experience where you met the person for the first time, and you feel like you have walked a mile in their shoes.

As a matter of fact, she told me that she was really impressed with passion I had about the subject of health. I told her about my philosophy about health and fitness from both an herbalist and martial artist standpoint. To make the long story short, we just bonded in such a way that lead to a long term business relationship.

I don’t get that experience with John Chow. Like I said before, law of attraction is based on the eye of the beholder. You said how some people resonate with really well and some don’t.

If you were to come to the bay area especially in the popular city of San Francisco, I will definitely do everything in my power to meet you in person. So please let me know when you will be holding a seminar in the California area. I will bring as many people to see you. Keep up the good work, Caroline.

@Billy, I know his comments are full of negative comments, I don’t read them :) What you describe about the way you feel around somebody like JC compared to how you felt around the speaker at the seminar is how LoA works. We are all vibrating on a certain frequency and we feel drawn to those people who are vibrating on a similar frequency and turned off but those that are not. That’s why we resonate with certain people, click with them and take an instant dislike to others.

Hi Caroline,

I like to play Poker occasionally, partly to win money, but it’s also social, however there are two other less obvious reasons. Poker tests your intuition and is an excellent indicator of how much positive energy you’re attracting at any given time. It’s certainly not all luck. In fact, I find that when I am feeling confident and positive that I do get the cards that lead to a profitable result, which of course builds my confidence as my position becomes stronger (relative to other players), but only if I can hold my nerve and don’t let negative emotions in.

Poker is a game that unlike the lottery requires either superlative communication skills or continuous good fortune over a period of time, therefore playing poker helps you refine your skill in attracting what you want in the short-term, and of course practice makes perfect.

Poker also has parallels with running a business such as good the need for judgement of another person or a situation, and knowing when to trust your instincts. Taking Poker seriously, perhaps to earn a living from, does enhance instincts and LoA skills.

I’ve just read the first two posts in your LoA series. I must watch that movie, also the book as mentioned by Adam Curry, which at the end of his 800th podcast this week, he talks about the law of attraction, and I think its well worth a listen. It’s in the last 20-25 minutes or so show #800 at http://www.dailysourcecode.com

@Ian, I played poker with some friends recently. My problem is that as soon as I get a decent hand my friend pumps up the ante and makes me nervous. I lose lol but I don’t care as its just fun hehe.

Ian Mayman
October 27, 2008

@Caroline, therein lies the problem for most people. As soon as things start to get good, they or someone else (but usually their own thoughts) makes them nervous, they start to worry. In Poker they’ll smile when something good happens and it will be easy to spot when they have a good hand - be it in poker or in life - and so consequently they lose most of the time.

It’s relatively easy, with a just a little practice, to fool another player that you have the best hand, but in life it is far harder to fool the sub-conscious into seeing an alternate reality because it listens and acts upon the subject of your every thought.

To clarify, if a person affirms to themselves “I want to stop smoking”, they will fail because all the sub-conscious sees is the subject matter: smoking. It’s much more effective to say at least several times a day “I want to breathe freely, smell better, and be healthy”.

It might sound ridiculous, but I recommend having a positive affirmation as your mobil phone ringtone, but perhaps not in a meditative ‘new agey’ voice! Get a friend to record it, or get a techy friend to record a synthesized voice from their computer. That’s very easy on a Mac using a voice called Alex and some audio recording software, but harder on Windows I find.

Caroline Middlebrook
October 28, 2008

@Ian, yes I see the analogy. What I find is that when I am trying to think in a new direction it takes quite a long time to turn around that thinking. For example, I want to start doing things on my own without feeling like I need to drag one of my friends along with me. This terrified me at first but over time as I think of it more and more the nerves and the fear have ebbed away and now it doesn’t scare me anymore - but that shift did not happen overnight. I don’t play poker very often so I suspect I won’t be a cool winner very soon :)

You may not believe me, but an interesting thing happened last night. I was signing players in for the tournament, the first person was a good and experienced player who normally beats at least half the players and sometimes wins. As I wrote his name down, I honestly thought to myself “first out“… and he was!

Am I psychic? I don’t think so. Did I attract his failure to him? I doubt it because the law works on the person thinking it (except I wasn’t playing). I did mess up a little myself however, so maybe the thought caused me to fail a bit. Who knows!

Hi Caroline
I found (I know it wasnt lost :)) your site through Yaro and Gideon from BaB.
It is strange you are talking about the Law of Attraction etc and especially Wayne Dyer.. as I have just recently become interested in internet stuff.. Wayne Dyer.. personal development type things etc so I guess me stumbling upon your site is a testement to the power of such things LOL..I’ve been listening to Wayne’s stuff on my ipod.. on my way to work with clients who would probably benefit more than most with the information and teaching he provides.. unfortunately the NHS is not so open minded!
Anyway, I enjoy your marketing blog and this too.. best of luck..

Channelling? A non-physical entity known only as “Abraham”. How curious that that’s Esther’s name for this….I don’t know what to call her “entity”.
Some of what I’ve read here, sounds somewhat like the Beck system of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy where the tallk counsellor attempts to teach the patient how not to react to the many hiccups (negativity) in the patient’s life. Been there, done that. It didn’t work for me.
I have spinal OA from my last t-vertebrae down, right side only. I have scoliosis. I have osteoporosis and now…celiac disease. And how did I mange to ‘attract’ these immune disorders and diseases into my life?? Ok, osteoporosis because in my 40’s, I was ignorant about taking calcium and my doctor and I, we didn’t connect so for about 7 yrs. I wasn’t taking supplements. OA could have been caused by a snow shovelling injury to my back in trying to impress a IL who didn’t like me. The scoliosis, that’s congenital. Celiac is further aggravated even when treated, by major emotional stress and the proper kind of counselling would help me deal with stress and how to not react to it or at least….deal with it.
Negativity is not one of my personality traits. Atypical SAD, dysthymia and clinical depression, mood disorders, some reactive, others genetic.
I can think: if only my teeth were straighter and healthier and whiter. Not going to happen.

i need help!!!
im a good person and i know that but i tend to for some reason have trouble breathing and being to critical with eevrything.
im siting in class and im subcoincesly thinking if eevrybody is looking at me.
i can actually feel it! ive told a girl a little about it and she says no girls have the intuition not guys well then how do i knoqw when someones looking at me?
-i know for a fact that im not lost, others are im just getting thrown off by the people that arent in touch.
i notice that some people are on another level then others and i seem to talk to them better.
but my real problem is i notice things to well, i try not to think about it to much but the lokins on people is the look of straight judgment… i need help to not get brought down by the loks of others and know what i know and go about my own way of life, but its difficult.
im learning that people are all different and do things differently. i can be tolerant of other peoples ways but it seems they arent of mine… i notice that i throw people off or somehow make them feel unconfortable or intimidate people.. some people get over it. but others seem to just have a problem with living…
i like to live confortabley like im at my house and speaking with people like i would family but others seem to have hidden agendas or just act.. it seems poeple are al fake and i cant be real…
cause as soon as i get real people get nervous.
ill be the first to admit that i get nervous too when the real comes around but im man enouph to get over it and let people grow…
im thinking its just me not being able to realize that others cant take it…
I want to be confortable. should i just go for it and move how i want to? even if others cant take it.
i know im not going to offend people by saying anything cause im not like that. but can i feel good?
i also dont like when people stare that much, i used to just make a weird face to throw them off but then i started to just look at them. i guess i just need to get over the anxiety and learn how to focus but help me out.
